My Studio

My studio

I am often asked where I create my sculpture. Well, I don't have a fancy studio, a garage, or even a shed in which to work.

The ceiling.
I am sort of like the village smithy of
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Instead
One of my consultants.
of working under the spreading chestnut
tree, I work under the spreading maple
tree.
The conditions are less than ideal. In the
summer it is blazing hot, in the winter
it is freezing cold, and all year long I
have to dodge raindrops. These conditions
are conducive to efficient work. I tend
to work in spurts and quite fast.
Actually, it it nice to work in the backyard.
I am able to take frequent breaks and get
advivce and opinions when needed.
So here are some pictures of my 'studio'.

Summer Shows

Lady With Earring
Sold  at Perkins members show
in June

It has been a while since my last post, but that doesn't mean
that I haven't been busy. In between closing out my iron
business and finding a new job I still managed to squeeze
in a few shows.

I entered a piece in the Perkins Center for the Arts annual
members show. I was happy to win an award for the piece,
Lady With Earring, and also happy to have it find a new
home.

In July I was the featured artist artist of the
Media Arts Council. I exhibited my work
at Jigsaw Home Solutions for the month.

Here are a few photos from that show.

I have also been working on some pieces
for an upcoming show in October in
Lancaster, PA. More info on that to come
later

Earth Day 2012

This year I will be the featured artist
at An Octopus's Garden for Earth
Day Weekend, April 20-22, 2012.
To celebrate Earth Day, I will present
a selection of my small, affordable
sculpture. As with all of my sculpture,
all of these pieces are created with
used and recycled metals.
An Octopus's Garden features a unique
and eclectic selection of fine art, jewelry,
and other 'one of a kind' items that are all
assembled under one roof for your
convenience.

In addition to my earth-friendly art, they also
feature other artists who believe as I do that
there is an abundance of used and neglected
material out there just waiting to be given a
second life.

You will find paintings on old maps,
jewelry made from repurposed items,
and art created from old vinyl LPs,
skateboards and many other unconventional
items.

So I invite you to join us for a wonderful weekend.
Friday evening from 6-9pm will be Millville's
Third Friday celebration, which is always fun.

An Octopus's Garden is located at:
510 N. High Street
Millville, NJ 08332

Working the High Iron

The latest piece in my 'America' series is
titled High Iron. It is an homage to the
brave men who built the bridges and
skyscrapers of this great nation.

Construction workers eat their lunches atop a steel beam 800 feet
above the ground, at the building site of the RCA building
at Rockefeller Center

Having spent the past 39 years as a
self-employed iron worker, I know a
bit about what it takes to be an iron
worker. It is a demanding job that
takes its toll on your body.

While I never worked the High Iron, I can
imagine what it was like. These brave men
risked their lives every day to do their job.
Before the days of OSHA and labor unions
to protect them, they went to work every
morning to a grueling job that few man would
even consider.
So here's to the iron workers., a special
breed of men who do a special kind of work.
America salutes you.

LOVE

A while ago, Maryann Kuntz of An Octopus's Garden
informed me that the shop would be having a
special shopping event for Valentines Day.
For quite some time she has been asking me
to create pieces with a topical theme. That isn't
normally what I do, but I did make a few spiders
for her at Halloween. They moved fairly well, but I
didn't plan on doing other holiday pieces.

With Valentines Day coming up, and me having
some free time, I decided to make a few pieces
with LOVE as the subject. I took a few down
to her shop and they were sold the next day.
So I spent all day Friday making more.

This has been a fun endeavor. I was quite surprised
by the many different ways I found to make those
four letters.

Valentines Day is right around the corner. This year,
rather than getting the same old flowers that will be
brown in a week, consider getting your Valentine
a gift that will last a lifetime.
These are available exclusively at An Octopus's Garden.
They are located in the Village.on.High, on High St.
in Millville, NJ

America

The American Way

We recently observed the 70th anniversary of
the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America's
entry into World War Two. The thing that struck
me about this was how quickly the American people
answered the call to arms. Overnight the
American people got to work and built a
military force second to none. This was not
an easy task, but Americans have never
failed to rise to the occasion. Hard work is
what built this country into the world's
leading industrialized civilization.

Let's Work Together

Sadly, this once great nation has turned
her back on what made her so great.
Today the labor and sweat of past generations
seems something to be avoided at all
costs. Manual labor is something to
be shipped offshore or something
associated with only those poor
souls who have to settle less.

OTR
I have created a new series of sculpture
that I am calling America. These sculptures
are designed to reflect the glory that once
was America. These pieces will pay homage
to all those who built this country with their
hard work. They have left behind a legacy
that cannot be forgotten.
