New Pieces for Upcoming Summer Shows

 Here are a few new pieces 

that I will be debuting at one or another of my summer shows.

Look for these pieces this summer.

Miniatures by Dan

 I've begun a new series of sculpture that I'm calling

"Miniatures by Dan"

These are small pieces.

They range in size from 2" to "8 in height.

Thus will be an ongoing series.

Torso

"Torso"

A sculpture created from a piece

that I found along the railroad tracks.

I'm not sure of its origins, 

but I believe it may be part of a coupler.

This piece exhibits strength and power.

It has many gouges and has been broken.

It must have experienced  tremendous forces that

twisted and gouged much character into its being.

This sculpture actually created itself. 

It was just waiting for someone to see it for what it really was.

I'm pleased to have been a part of its destiny.

Lefty Loosey - Righty Tighty

Lefty Loosey and Righty Tighty

  are my two newest wall hangings.

The titles come from an old mechanic's saying.

When someone was unsure which way to turn a screw, the

mechanic would say "lefty loosey, righty tighty"

These two pieces prominently feature tools that turn-

wrenches, screwdrivers, drill bits, etc.

They are on the larger side, measuring 24" in diameter by 40" in height.

de'monte'

De'monte' 

is a minimalist abstract sculpture.

This sculpture, excluding the base is comprised of only four elements.

Three of those elements are simple geometric shapes, 

a square, a rectangle, and a circle.

The fourth element, a free form rusty metal rod, 

is what brings movement and depth to the piece.

This is a relatively small piece,

measuring only 14" in height.

Working the High Iron

The latest piece in my 'America' series is

titled High Iron. It is an homage to the

brave men who built the bridges and

skyscrapers of this great nation.

Having spent the past 39 years as a

self-employed iron worker, I know a

bit about what it takes to be an iron

worker. It is a demanding job that

takes its toll on your body.

While I never worked the High Iron, I can 

imagine what it was like. These brave men

risked their lives every day to do their job.

Before the days of OSHA and labor unions

to protect them, they went to work every

morning to a grueling job that few man would

even consider.

So here's to the iron workers., a special

breed of men who do a special kind of work.

America salutes you.



LOVE

A while ago, Maryann Kuntz of An Octopus's Garden
informed me that the shop would be having a
special shopping event for Valentines Day.
For quite some time she has been asking me
to create pieces with a topical theme. That isn't
normally what I do, but I did make a few spiders
for her at Halloween. They moved fairly well, but I
didn't plan on doing other holiday pieces.

With Valentines Day coming up, and me having
some free time, I decided to make a few pieces
with LOVE as the subject. I took a few down
to her shop and they were sold the next day.
So I spent all day Friday making more.

This has been a fun endeavor. I was quite surprised
by the many different ways I found to make those
four letters.

Valentines Day is right around the corner. This year,
rather than getting the same old flowers that will be
brown in a week, consider getting your Valentine
a gift that will last a lifetime.

New Sculptures and "I Heart Art"

 In preparation for the upcoming
I Heart Art show, I have been
working on some new pieces.




These pieces have been created
in my new 'studio', which is just
a space out back under the maple
tree. I am in the process of selling
my old building, but the wheels turn awfully slowly. So until the
transaction is completed I am
temporarily confined to the
backyard.

Before the Wind



Chains

Over time, I have amassed quantities of chain. I wanted
to incorporate some of this chain into a few of my
sculptures. The question that I faced was how to use it.
I have seen many sculptures using chain where the links
have been welded to make the chain rigid. I've also
seen chain used primarily as just a mechanism to hang
a piece, not really used as an integral part of the

What I ended up doing was to put these approaches
out of my mind and just grab a few lengths of chain and
go at it. After several false starts, I came up with several
designs that I thought worked. I believe that I have used
